PART 1 SIMPLE PAST TENSE OF THE VERB BE; YES/NO QUESTIONS; INFORMATION QUESTIONS; THERE WAS/THERE WERE

1) Use was or were to complete these sentences. Use contractions for the negatives.

-My grandparents were introduced in 1983. They were at a dance.

-My grandmother’s name was Catherine. My grandfather’s was Robert.

-My grandfather’s was a medical student. My grandmother was in high school.

-My grandmother was quite young. She was seventeen. My grandfather wasn’t (not) as Young. He was twenty-two.

-They weren’t (not) from the same city. My grandfather was from Philadelphia. My grandmother was from New York.

-They were also from different backgrounds. My grandfather’s family wasScandinavian. My grandmother’s family was from Spain.

-Even their religion weren’t (not) the same.

-Finally, her family was rich. His family was poor.

-To them, these things weren’t (not) important. They were in love!

2) Ask and answer these questions about Christine’s grandparents from Activity 1.

Example: A. Were Catherine and Robert introduced at school?

B. No, they weren’t.

-Was Robert a medical student?

R/ Yes, he was.

-Were they from different backgrounds?

R/Yes, They were.

-Was Catherine the same age as Robert?

R/ No, she wasn’t.

-Were they from the same city?

R/ No, they weren’t.

-Was Robert from Philadelphia?

R/ Yes, he was.

-Was Catherine from Los Angeles?

R/ No, she wasn’t.

-Was Catherine a medical student?

R/ No, she wasn’t.

-Were both families rich?

R/ No, they weren’t.

3) Make questions from these statements. The answers to the questions are the underlined words.

Examples: -Robert was a medical student.

Who was a medical student?

-They were introduced in 1938.

When were they introduced?

- Robert and Catherine were at a dance.

Where were Catherine and Robert?

- Robert was from Philadelphia.

Where was from Robert?

- Catherine was from New York.

Where was from Catherine?

- She was seventeen.

- He was twenty-two.

Was he twenty two?

- Roberts’s parents were Scandinavian.

Were parents Robert’s from Scandinavian?

- Her family was from Spain.

- They were married in 1941.

4) Use was or were to complete these sentences. Use contractions for the negatives.

-The marriage was a bad idea. There were several reasons.

-First, there were religious differences between Catherine and Robert.

-There were problems with money.

-There weren’t(not) many jobs at that time.

-There was even a bigger problem.

-There was a huge war in Europe.

-In the United States, there were many young men already in the military.

* Use the pictures and cues on page 115 to make sentences. Use the past tense of the verbs.

- Stay: In the 1950s, most women stayed at home.

-Wash: Maria washed the clothes of their children.

-Iron: Lucy ironed the clothes always.

-Fold: I folded the clothes in the morning.

-clean: Silvia cleaned the house of her mother.

- Watch: Brittany watched the children in the house.

- Fix: Claudia fixed the meals in the kitchen.

- Listen to: Sofia listened to their husbands singing.

3) Complete each group of sentences with the verbs listed. Use the simple past tense.

-Kiss, walk, hug. In the 1950s my grandfather hugged and kissed my grandmother goodbye in the morning. Then he walked out the door.

-Wash, walk, stay, dress.My grandmother Stayed home. She washed the breakfast dishes. Then she dressed the children and walked the children to school.

-Wash, iron, fold. After that she washedand ironedthe clothes. She folded the shirts.

-Pick, clean, water. She cleaned the floors. Then she watered the garden and picked some roses.
