The Meanings of the Color Green and the Green Sash, and its Effect on Sir Gawain

Sir Gawain and the Green knight is a poem that was written in the 14th century Middle English romance. This story describes how Sir. Gawain, a knight of King Arthur’s Round Table accepts a challenge known as the beheading game, from a mysterious Green Knight with green clothes and hair. The Green Knight challenges any other knight to strike him a blow with his axe if he will take a return blow in a year and a day. This challenge makes us doubt about the true chivalry and braveness of Gawain because of many decisions he takes. This is a type of a game that is played during the Christmas season in England. It is also an interesting poem that is also filled with romance in different Stanzas that are paragraphs composed in the bob and wheel. The poem basis its story from a hero who goes on a quest for power that tests his prowess which he later emerges a winner of the time. The poem begins with a lengthy description which establishes the setting to be in Arthurian Britain. A rich description follows where the writer of the poem traces the history of Britain in Trojan War. The poem also occurred in the New Year’s celebrations in Camelot where there is a description of the luxurious and well decorated attires. The color green and the green sash have many symbolizations like love protection, nature and jealousy but the interesting thing is why.

The green color symbolizes firstly the green knight himself, the most common symbolization being Nature itself. How he survived Sir Gawain’s blow that decapitated him, meaning he was out of this world a supernatural being and also how he lived in a chapel between the woods and nature. “She imagined this mischief would muddle you minds and that the grieving Guinevere would go to her grave at the sight of a specter making ghostly speeches with his head in his hands before the high table” (2459-2462) I think that the green color relates jealousy in this tale with jealousy Morgan felt for King Arthur and Guinevere, it was so big she sent the Green Knight to kill Guinevere by scaring her when the Green knight survives the blow, picks up his head and starts speaking.

The Green Sash can also mean what the color green does, but it has two specific meanings the first one and less important being a love token from the lord’s wife. “But the knight who knew the power knitted in it would pay a high price to possess it, perhaps,” (1849-1850). The second one was the protection Gawain knew the sash had, and he knew even if he did not want to accept it, his fear of death did not let him decline it because anyone who had that sash would be protected from anyone who seek to kill him. Here we can argue if Gawain was a chivalrous, brave and fearless like a true knight. But him accepting the sash made him look afraid and weak. He was so afraid of death he felt he needed something to protect him. We can also argue he was brave by even knowing he was going to die he
