Introduction

In the competitive today’s world, being the favorite brand and the preferred choice of the costumers it’s such an important thing to accomplish. It surely sounds easy to do right? But what if what we think to do it’s the wrong step? What if instead to be on the top we are going to be on the bottom. This is where this methods appears.

5s method and Six sigma method seeks the same thing over different process: a product of great quality which will be remembered by everyone. 

Objectives

General Objectives:

• Understand the difference between each method.

• Know in which occasions and under what circumstances its better the use of a method or the other

Specific Objectives:

• Identify the key points of each method

• Learn how to use and implement the 5s method

• Learn about the two sub-methodologies of the Six Sigma.

• Understand the keys of the Six Sigma success.

5S Methodology

Description

5S is the name of a workplace organization method that uses a list of five Japanese words:

1. Seiri

2. Seiton

3. Seiso

4. Seiketsu

5. Shitsuke

This words translated into English they all start with the letter "S", that’s where the name “5S” comes from. The list describes how to organize a work space for efficiency and effectiveness by identifying and storing the items used, maintaining the area and items, and sustaining the new order. The decision-making process usually comes from a dialogue about standardization, which builds understanding among employees of how they should do the work. The purpose of the 5S method is the elimination of the waste.

Implementation

As told before, the 5s method owns its name to the translation into English the five essential words from Japanese. This words doesn’t only have a meaning, are steps too that have to be followed in order to implement this method. These steps are:

1. Sort:

It consists on sorting out what items, supplies, equipment that you need in the work area to perform work. In this way, you remove all of the items, supplies, equipment that you do not need to perform the work.

2. Set In Order:

It means finding the proper place for all items, supplies, and equipment so that everyone can easily identify, find, use and put it away when done.

3. Shine:

It means cleaning the work area and making sure that all items, supplies and equipment are in working order.

4. Standardize:

This is the method that is developed to maintain the first three steps of the process.

5. Sustain:

This is the habit or discipline to maintain the standards and procedures.
