Content Learning Integrated Language refers to teaching subjects such as science, history and geography to students through a foreign language. This can be by the English teacher using cross-curricular content or the subject teacher using English as the language of instruction. Both methods result in the simultaneous learning of content and English.

Cognitive Academic Language Learning Approach is designed for limited English proficiency students who are being prepared for participating in mainstream content-area instruction. Furthers academic language development in English through content area instruction in science, math and social studies. Ss are taught to use learning strategies derived from cognitive model of learning to assist in their comprehension and retention on both language skills and concepts in the content areas

Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol offers an empirically-validated approach to teaching that helps prepare all students—especially English learners –to become college and career ready. There are eight interrelated components :

- Lesson Preparation

- Building Background

- Comprehensible Input

- Strategies

- Interaction

- Practice and Application

- Lesson Delivery

- Review and Assessment

Content Based Instruction is a method where learning and content are combine in order to have a theme lesson. CBI is teaching organized around the content or information that students will acquire. Classroom needs to be filled with real and meaningful communication where information is exchanged. Sees language as combination of several skills used together. The objectives refer to the content not the language.

Students activities should be based on a peer cooperative work and they should help set content, language and learning skills outcomes.

Students become independent, who can evaluate and reflect on their own learning

Most of the Ss are inmigrants in this program

Ss become autonomous. They support each other and are active entrepreneurs of input.

Teacher’s role is the facilitator

Teacher’s role is just the model of the class

Teachers are able to draw out the knowledge of ss and are knowledgeable of the subject
