The crisis of the Mexican textile industry and its challenges

According to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), the Mexican textile industry as a whole recorded in 2013 a value of sales of manufactured products by 89, 448 million pesos, up 2.38 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP), manufacturing, and earned income from the maquila for 23, 163 million pesos and gives direct and formal employment to 425 people and it is estimated that more than 300,000 workers are employed in this industry in the informal economy.

President of the National Chamber of Textile Industry (Canaintex), Moises Kalach R. Bales, recently stated that the textile and clothing industry recorded a decrease in the first months of this year that barely allow this industry between 1 percent and 2 percent in 2014, which will drop if you consider the increased 2.9 percent in 2013.

The president of industrial textiles believes that one of the main problems facing the industry is that it has not succeeded in stopping the entry of goods China sub - valued and still no definition of the path that will take the complaint to be filed before the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Kalach also stated that exports of textile industry last year amounted to 6,200 billion and imports were around 20 billion dollars, mostly from China, which often enter below its real value.
