ACTING OUT Impulsive and uncontrollable outburst

ADDICTION Strong emotional and/or psychological dependence upon a substance such as alcohol or a drug, which has progressed beyond voluntary control.

AFFECT A person's emotional feeling or tone.Affect and emotion are often used interchangeably.

AGGRESSION As a psychiatric term, forceful attacking action-may be verbal,physical or symbolic.May be realistic and self-protective, including healthy self-assertiveness;or may be unrealistic and directed outward toward others or the environment, or inward toward the self.

AGITATION State of chronic restlessness;a major psychomotor expression of emotional tension. Should be viewed by the mental health worker as a s/s that a pt's anxiety is increasing or that violence is imminent.

AMBIVALENCE The coexistence of two opposing feelings,drives, desires,or emotions toward the same person,object or goal.May be conscious or partly conscious;or one side of the feelings may be unconscious.A"love/hate" relationship.

ANXIETY Apprehension,tension or uneasiness which stems from the anticipation of danger, the source of which is largely unknown or unrecognized.Primarily of intrapsychic origin (as opposed to fear, which is an emotional resopnse to a consiously reconized and usually external threat or danger). Anxiety and fear are accompanied by similar physiologic changes. May be regared as pathogical when present to such an extent as to interfere with effectiveness in living,achievement of desired goals or satisfactions or emotional comfort.

BLOCKING Difficulty in recollection,or interruption of a train of thought or speech due to emotional factors,usually unconscious.

CHARACTER The sum of relatively fixed personality traits and habitual modes of response of an individual. General Sadler's definition of character.:"How well you treat someone who can do absolutely nothing for you."

COGNITIVE

DISSONANCE Describes the uncomfortable tension that comes from holding two conflicting thoughts at the same time. The theory of cognitive dissonance states that this conflict serves as a driving force to acquire new thoughts or beliefs, or to modify existing beliefs, so as to reduce the amount of dissonance, conflict,or tension. Ex; Mrs.Wright wanted a girl. She had a boy-and decided that was OK because she liked the boy's name she had picked out much better than the girl's name her husband had picked.(and girls whine anyway...) Often a healthy defense mechanism.
