Amazing Santander

This amazing place takes its name in honor of Francisco de Paula Santander one of the most important people in Colombia who participated in the Colombian freedom of Spain.

Politically, Santander is divided in six provinces: Comunera, García Rovira; Guanenta; Mares; Soto and Vélez.

Prior to the arrival of spanish conquerors Santander was inhabited by the ethnic groups: Muiscas; Chitarera; Lache; Yariguí; Opon; Carare and in an special way the town Guane, the former allowed to the Chibcha Family.

The first conquerors who arrived to Santander were: Ambrosio Alfinger and Antonio de Lebrija in 1532.

Santander cuisine referred to roasted ants “hormigas culonas”. The sociologist and historian Emilio Arenas says that, roasted ants were eaten by poor people, since rich people did not like its bottom. Roasted ants had a shameful stage. Rich people, instead of said “hormiga culona” said “hormiga colona”. They were ashamed of talking about that. Even though, on occasion people assured in order to discredit them that they came from cemeteries. However, roasted ants remain relevant.

One of the most important festivals in Santander is “Mono Nuñez” in Velez. This is another emblematic tradition. Do not forget the “Bocadillo Veleño” one of the most delicious guava desserts.

The most outstanding and representative people of the Colombian Santander region are: Jose Antonio Galan , Horacio Serpa the politician , Alfonso florez Ortiz winner of Dauhinee libere; Victor Hugo Peña winner of the France tour and entrepreneurs such as: Carlos Ardila Lulle, Puyana Family, and the artists Pablus Gallinazus, famous for calling his son Eneas Gallinazus.

Some of the places of interest are: Chicamocha National park; San Gil that is a tourist capital to practice Kayak in the Fonce River, climbing and rafting. Gallineral park, the Curití native cemetery and the unequalled Barichara qualified as the most beautiful town in Colombia.

All the artists are jealous of Barichara’s light. They say that there is no place in the world where the sun shine like in Barichara does.

Santander is amazing. Come and join us, there is also rural tourism. Find out the rout Geo Von Lengerke in Zapatoca known as “The leviticus city” because of the amount of monasteries located there.

Nowadays, in Santander there are many important projects such as:

The hydroelectric power station on the Sogamoso river, the free trade zone of health and the enlargement of the refinery of Barrancabermeja.

These projects have attracted a lot of professionals and their families. Santander is an amazing place for living and as we said: who steps on Santander,
