INTEGRATING ACTIVITY

  1. In teams of 4 or 5 people, according to your teacher, solve the following case.

A sales manager of a screw factory got a special request; the costumer wanted half million of screws whose thread be 1/8 inch, with a length of two inches. The production supervisor is aware that all the products are only manufactured using the international system of units so, he indicates to the sales manager that he does not have the necessary devices to manufacture the required product therefore it is not possible to fulfill the request. The manager does not want to lose the request so he orders to the operators to work adapting the requiring measurements to the international systems. A week later after delivering the product, the customer returned it to the company because he says that the company did not fulfill his requirements due to the screws only have 1.9 inches of length and 0.11 inches of thread.

  1. What values (in mm) do the operators take as conversion factors?
  2. What equivalences should they use?
  3. What was the mistake that they made at manufacturing the product?
  4. What were the measurements that they should take to manufacture appropriately the product?
  5. What kind of instruments should be employed for those measurements?
  6. How can the problem be solved?

The operators used these factors:1 inch= 24.13 mm, so they were wrong because 1 inch is equivalent to 25.4 mm and a 1/8 of inch is = 3.175 mm. The equivalence that they should used is 1 inch= 25.4 mm or 1 inch= 2.54cm. The mistake in the preparation of the product is: in the step where the multiplication of the length and the thread (1/8in-0.11in)*(25.4mm/1in factors took place) = 0.381mm. in length is (2In-1.9In)*(25.4mm/1in) = 2.54 mm. the most important measure is the factor to be used in the conversion of the two systems since they used an incorrect conversion factor due to use the factor of conversion from inches to millimeters or inches to centimeters and then convert these to mm. The instrument that is used must be a tool that is previously calibrated with standards and correct measures approved and the Vernier is used (also called Vernier callipers, Vernier, is a measuring instrument used to measure medium accurately up to 128 inches and 10,000th meter) resolves obviously getting correct values of each one of the factors which are: Length: = 2 inches (25. 4 mm) (2) = 50.8mm of length and thread: 1/8  inch = (25. 4mm÷8) (1) = 3.175mm. after having measures and correct equivalents all that remains is to initiate the development of one million screws customer requested and this time the production is performed under supervision and before being delivered the order to the customer, this must be verified once again.
