Course description
Nowadays Buenos Aires shelters 13 million inhabitants. How do they live? Which are the factors that generate the notions of place, space and identity in daily dynamics?
The course intends to re-trace Buenos Aires´ recent history discovering those historical highlights that helped to shape the city. How can we find evidence of those events that determined the urban profile, the social interactions, and the power relations? Which was the Government participation in this matter? Can tracks of Buenos Aires´ memory be found in the contemporary city?
Through diverse field trips and activities the students will be able to identify social and morphologic structures that will allow them to understand how the city evolves. They will be able to recognize, through living experiences, art, cinema and literature; the characteristics of a global, ever changing cosmopolitan city. Which are those physiognomies that Buenos Aires share with other Latin American cities? Which are the common political, economic and social issues that concern South American countries?
In the final section of the course we will be able to discuss with formed critical thinking about Buenos Aires´ future scenarios of urban change, environmental tendencies and its complex interaction with a globally changed world.
Course aims and objectives
Throughout an active Buenos Aires focused analysis, the course tries to form world citizens’ students offering tools and specific methods that will enable them to analyze and fully understand any destination´s subtleties that they intend to visit.
The course aspires to contribute to the students’ formation with analytical objective capacities, technical specific vocabulary and general notions of related anthropology, sociology and urbanism.
Learning Outcomes
• To know how to identify and analyze the complexities of urban socio-cultural realities by using social perspectives and research tools.
• To acquire the ability to relate critical thinking and relevant urban theory to cities and city living
• To recognize the relationship amongst global, national and urban socio-economic inequalities
• To analyze critically the impacts of globalization on the cultural politics of Argentine identity
• To compare and contrast urban environments in Buenos Aires with other urban areas in South America and the rest of the world.
• To contextualize the social dynamics of Buenos Aires in relation to the changing global contexts.
• To appreciate the ways in which representations of Buenos Aires in popular culture, media and film have changed over time and the reasons for these changes
• To engage critically with debates surrounding Buenos Aires´ diversity, urban regeneration and governance and recognize the relationship amongst socio-economic inequalities at global,
