The Earthquake in Mexico
An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 occurred in Mexico, killing thousands of lives and leaving many damages.
The rupture of the earthquake of September 19, 2017 occurred within the oceanic plate of Cocos, below the continent, at a depth of 57 km. While this type of earthquake is not the most common in Mexico, it is by no means extraordinary. These ruptures occur at greater depths than the typical subduction earthquakes such as that of 1985, which takes place under the Mexican Pacific coast on the contact interface between the Cocos and North American tectonic plates. The intraplate earthquakes, of intermediate depth, are produced by extensive stresses along the Cocos plate. The geological faults associated with these earthquakes are known as "normal faults". It should be mentioned that studies carried out for intraplate earthquakes in Mexico show that, per year, the probability that the intensity of shaking in Mexico City due to this type of earthquake is great is very similar to that of typical subduction earthquakes. , like that of 1985, among others. This implies that the seismic danger in the capital, associated with intraplate earthquakes (such as those of September 7 and 19, 2017), is as great as that of the most common earthquakes that occur under the Mexican Pacific coast.
In schools and buildings all the people were wanting to leave, but they piled up on the stairs, everything was shaking, the roofs were falling, Upon leaving, a wall of the building next door had collapsed and the whole street was full of dust. We thought that all the buildings were falling and people started running towards Insurgentes.
“We were finishing making bread to sell today and it started to shake. The windows and the lights broke. We managed to put out the stoves before something worse happened.”
“The building in my office is old. It is in La Condesa, one of the areas where the earthquake felt most. It has 20 floors, and I was in the seventh, so I got desperate and did not want to go down the stairs. I decided to get under my desk and began to feel how things fell, how part of the wall came off the table. When the building stopped moving, we started to descend.2
The balance of fatalities as a result of the earthquake of magnitude 7.1 that shook the center and south of Mexico has amounted to 324, according to the latest official balance. The national coordinator of Civil Protection, Luis Felipe Puente, has confirmed through his Twitter account the increase in the number of deaths, distributed as follows: Puente has indicated that at least 186 people have died in Mexico City. The dead in the capital of the country are added 45 in Morelos, 45 in Puebla, 13 in the State of Mexico, 6 in Guerrero and one in Oaxaca
