“CATHARSIS IN THE WORK, ATITUD AND

PERSON OF ANDY KAUFMAN”

This essay is going to make a brief explanation of what catharsis is and if it has a relation with Andy Kaufman. First I’m going to start with a question what is catharsis? The definition will always be the same: “purification of the passions or feelings by the contemplation of artwork”^[1]. But the meaning will change not only not only with the passage of time, also with the person who is living the catharsis. That’s why in my opinion this theme is something a little bit difficult but I´m trying to do the best I can.

       I think catharsis is what for Audrey Tautou in Amélie has when she said she “cultivates a taste for small pleasures”.^[2] What I’m trying to explain is that catharsis in for me that moment when you fell wonderful and powerful.

       What is catharsis for me? For me catharsis is having a performance (singing, acting) yes that moment when you step in a stage and the play is going to start, you fell that nervousness this is an example of what is for me catharsis .

       Now that you have like an idea of what catharsis is, the question of the million dollars. Does Andy Kaufman tries to create a catharsis in his audience? No, in my opinion Andy does not try to create catharsis to the audience, he create catharsis to his audience but it wasn´t his at first it wasn’t his intention, he was a weird person, and I think what he tries to do was to create a catharsis in him. But I thing that “felling” of catharsis was a very important for his job. That felling was the one that makes him to do all that crazy things he did without this the famous character of Andy Kaufman wouldn’t exist.

Well I think that as Andy the catharsis is something essential for our lives, it was keep us living, what keeps you trying and trying. For example when you are in love, some kind of catharsis is provoke we you see, talk, smell, think, kiss in this person, if you broke up with him/her or if you are trying to be with this person that catharsis make you keep trying to be with this special person or when h this special person or when you want a good future the future you always want, when you want to afford all your wishes, you have that catharsis, is like the motor of your life, yes as I had said it Kaufman was a weird person so as the things that provoke him catharsis, but that what kept him want to experiment, to do new things.

Does the catharsis is falling now a days? Yes catharsis is falling, look at the guys at the street guys are empty. The solution is laughs, laugh of whatever some person may say that that is fool or stupid. But this words are for you my lovely laugh like Leona Lewis will said “everyone's looking round, thinking I'm going crazy, but I don't care what they say, I'm in love with you, they try to pull me away, but they don't know the truth”^[3].

And if someone like Andy is missing for the times we are living? Yes and no. Yes because in my opinion there are no humans like him, so I thing every person who knows or saw him
