In the University of Puerto Rico at Cayey we can find the “Plaza Agustin Stahl” located in the center of the campus. In the Agustin Stahl plaza we find a beautiful fountain that is made of rock. The Puerto Rican Sculptor that created a bust in its honor was Tomás Batiste.
Agustín Stahl born on January 21, 1842 in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico and died on July 12, 1917 in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. Stahl studied Medicine in two European Universities, University of Wartburg and in University of the Prague, where graduated with the title of Medicine doctor in 1864, when graduating receives a diploma of honor of the king of Bavaria by its doctoral thesis, which tried on disenteria.
After its graduation Agustín Stahl returned to Puerto Ricowhere it exerted the medicine in its medical doctor's office in the city of Bayamón, San Juan, Yabucoa, Manati and other towns; nevertheless, besides its profession it was interested in several fields of the knowledge, which lead to him to experience and to investigate in Ethnology, Botanical, and in Zoology . Also History interested to him and to investigate on the historical facts.
Agustín Stahl received numerous prizes and awards of institutions such as:
• The Spanish Anthropological Society.
• The Academy of the Arts and Sciences of Barcelona.
• The Academy of Medical Sciences of Catalonia.
Agustín Stahl had the conviction of which Puerto Rico had to become of Spain independent, being a member of " Autonomous party Puertorriqueño". Because of his political points of view, it was dismissed of his position of University professor of natural history of the Institute of the Second Education of San Juan and was deportee of Puerto Rico in 1898; but it returns to the island after the change of sovereignty.
Agustín Stahl died in the city of Bayamón and their rests were buried in the municipal cemetery of Bayamón.
