The novel begins with an interesting chapter in which a group of Uruguayan get together for dinner in an upmarket restaurant. At first critical of his country, finding only bad things. Then it focuses on the story of the life of Ramón Budiño and the influence his father, Edmundo Budiño, which everyone knows as the Elder, one of the most important characters in the country, newspaper owner and factory; it is talking about the "present" and one of the pillars of Uruguay.
