The novel begins with an interesting chapter in which a group of Uruguayan get together for dinner in an upmarket restaurant. At first critical of his country, finding only bad things. However, when they believe it has been devastated by a flood downplay the situation, to learn that there really has not been to both and attempt recovery of objectivity.
Then it focuses on the story of the life of Ramón Budiño and the influence his father, Edmundo Budiño, which everyone knows as the Elder, one of the most important characters in the country, newspaper owner and factory; it is talking about the "present" and one of the pillars of Uruguay. But it's not all glory and praise from behind Edmund Budiño is a strong supporter of rightist political power; It gives young arms to dismantle the leftist rallies, dirty business at the factory, unscrupulous as Ramón live and relive this situation, mixing it with small memories.
A couple of chapters focused on old lover when she explains the relationship with him, first to show love and admiration regardless of their lack of scruples and the other, later, to show disappointment dela woman before the changes made by her lover, they are somewhat forced to break the story up.

One could say that the theme of this work is fundamentally social because it focuses on describing the crisis in the society of his time reflecting on government critics and poor conditions in which people live is mired.
