Gardens of Contamination

Puerto Rico is famous for its beauty. It has gorgeous lakes, rivers, oceans, mountains, forests, valleys and caves. However, many of these beauties have been contaminated due to people’s irresponsible actions. Nowadays, pollution is an area of concern for the whole planet. It is bad for the environment, and for our health. There are many diseases associated with pollution such as asthma, skin and lung cancer. The island suffers from various types of pollution such as soil, water, air, noise and car pollution due to our ignorance. For the time being, we can consider many parts of the island gardens of contamination.

Two of the biggest pollutions concerns in Puerto Rico are the water and soil pollution, since they threaten our own health. Many people throw pesticides and chemical products to our water waste, which directly affect humans, animals and plants. The deposit of sewer waste in the ocean is another important factor that contributes to these problems. The building's sewer system requires bodies of water for them to dump the waste. In addition, soil waste hinders the development of the majorities of crops. It makes the contaminated land unsuitable for agricultural purposes. This limits food production to non-contaminated soil and, therefore, limits the amount of produce ready for consumption.

Another area of contamination is the air. Usually, cars and trucks cause air pollution. This contamination affects health conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, and allergies. Pesticide is another cause of contamination. This contamination triggers the development of skin and lung cancer. Other types of contamination are noise and car pollution. Noise pollution is caused by excessive amounts of car horns, airplanes, motorcycles and loud music. Traffic jams are a vivid example that includes car air and noise pollution together.

Even though Puerto Rico is considered the garden of the Caribbean, nowadays it is in danger of completely becoming a garden of contamination. It is a shame it is to see such a beautiful country contaminated with all sorts of pollution. Hopefully, we will take the responsibility of being alert of the situation. We will avoid further contamination of the environment by creating awareness of our current state of degradation.
