The Oval Portrait
This chapter explains a story about two friends, the main character and his valet Pedro, who are traveling through the Apennine Mountains in Italy. The main character was hurt and had a high fever. Then they saw a strange castle and Pedro decided to break into the castle. Once inside, they decided to rest in a room with a lot of paintings. Pedro lit the candles of a candelabrum and then, since Pedro was asleep, the main character moved the candelabrum so he could read easily. The light of the candles illuminated a strange little painting; it was a portrait of a adolescent girl. The portrait was done very well and the girl was extremely beautiful. For a moment it looked like a living person, the expression on her face was almost perfectly lifelike. He immediately looked in a book for the story of this oval portrait. This book talk about a couple. The husband was an artist who loves painting and his wife agreed to pose for a painting. The artist worked with energy and only thought of his work, he became obsessed with capturing every shade and color. He worked day and night to paint the woman who loved him. Finally he only needed to add a little bit of color for his face. The color of his wife’s face shone again for a moment and then went out like a lamp. He then cried loudly, she was dead!
