Altos de Chavón:
Charles Bludorn, an American business man was the person who personally chose this place for the construction of Altos de Chavón. Chavón derives from the indigenous term QUIABON, word used by de taíno Indians to identify the river; it seems to be a Mediterranean village from the XVI century, but the construction really began in 1976 and it lasted almost 10 years, is one of the most visited places in the Dominican Republic.
The original plans were design for the Dominican Architect, José Antonio Caro Álvarez, and after the Italian designer Roberto Coppa in cooperation with a group of Dominicans artisans designed it.
Every stone, every piece of wood were carefully cut manually introducing some elements of wrought-iron every path is in stone. This amphitheater with a capacity of about 5,000 persons was inaugurated with a concert held by Frank Sinatra in 1982, after being inaugurated many artists widely known in the whole world like Julio Iglesias, Marc Anthony, Shakira, Gloria Stephan, Air Supply, Luis Miguel, Ricky Martin and many others have been here in concert.
Today Altos de Chavón is a big center of professional and cultural activities; in this central part we have the church San Estanislao consecrated by the Pope John Paul II in 1979, Chavón also offers a great deal o restaurants and stores.
