The Crucible
"Long- held hatreds of neighbors could now be openly expressed, and vengeance taken, despite the Bible's charitable injunctions. Land-lust which had been expressed before by constant bickering over boundaries and deeds, could now be elevated to the arena of morality; one could cry witch against one's neighbor and feel perfectly justified in the bargain. Old scores could be settled on a plane of heavenly combat between Lucifer and the Lord; suspicions and the envy of miserable toward the happy could and did burst out in the general revenge"
1)What is the message the author is trying to get across?
A theme reflective in this passage is the injustice and revenge, which was around that time by the people and also the ease that they had to judge each other.
Also the theme of this play was rising over adversity, and standing for truth even to death.
2)What feeling does the author evoke with this text?
The author (using a plain and concise language, simple sentences, and he wrote the text in 3rd person) get to evoke a serious, cynical, and formal tone (that you can see in the way that this text is written and also in the following example, Ex. hatreds of neighbors could now be openly expressed...could now be elevated to the arena of morality).
The mood of this passage is reflective, solemn, respectfull and candid because it talks about when people could judge each other easily just because of the envy (Ex.and the envy of miserable toward the happy could and did burst out in the general revenge).
3)How does the author accomplish these intentions?
Arthur Mille uses a plain and concise language, and simple sentences (without taking away from the suspense in he plot) to develop that even deeply religious people make mistakes in their lives.
He uses a plain and concise language to make the reader be focus on the message that he's trying to get across that is that religious people can also make mistakes in their lives judging other persons but at the end we all get what we deserve for our deeds (point that is not reflect at all on this paragraph, just in the sentence: Old scores could be settled on a plane of heavenly combat between Lucifer and the Lord, but its really represented at the end of the play).
