4) Discuss the reasons why the Reformation can be considered an important event in the process of secularization beginning in Early Modern Times.
Protestantism began in 1517 with the publication of Martin Luther`s Ninety-five theses, where he criticized the views of the Catholic Church, by condemning the selling of indulgences; an indulgence was viewed as a `a way of to reduce the amount of punishment one has undergone for sins`, which may reduce the penance after death in the state of purification called Purgatory. To Luther`s eyes the church was simply selling salvation and he considered that act as a corrupt practise to absolve sins. The Protestant Reformation is considered as a landmark that signals that, through the progress in Modernity, the Catholic Church started to lose authority in society´s life and government. In this essay, I will examine the principles of Lutheranism, to what extent it succeeded in spreading in many countries in Europe and the consequences of its dissemination.
1st Topic sentence: Sola fide in Latin ´faith alone´, one of the main premises imposed by the Luther´s doctrine as an opposition to Catholicism, was undoubtedly defined as a revolutionary thought which transcended in Western history of mankind.
