Introduction:
Proteins, Lipids and Carbs are biomolecules, they have a big role in the human body. They all provide different functions for the body. These biomolecules are composed of Monomers(One) and Polymers(Group of monomers). Proteins are made of amino acids(monomer) and a chain of amino acids forms polypeptides and protein(polymers). Carbs are made of Monosaccharaides(monomer) and two monosaccharaides are a disaccharide and a group of monosaccharaides makes a polysaccharide(polymer), monosaccharaides and disaccharides are simple carbs but polysaccharides are complex carbs, examples of polysaccharides are starch and cellulose and examples of monosaccharaides are glucose and fructose. Then we have lipids, Fatty acid(monomer) chains form triglycerides and phospholipids(polymers).
All of these Biomolecules are found in food, sometimes you don’t know which food has which biomolecule so there are procedures to detect certain biomolecules in food. To find simple carbs you will use the benedict solution, to find complex carbs you will use iodine solution, to find protein you will use biuret’s solution, and to find lipids you will use ethanol’s solution. The way it works is that each biomolecule reacts with a solution and it changes colour, so if you have 5 food samples and 1 changes to a specific colour then that food sample is positive for the biomolecule you tested for.
State problem or research question:
Research question:
If I change the type of food then which one of them will react with the certain solution?
Independent variable:
The type of food
Dependent variable:
The reaction of food with the solution
There will be 5 test tubes each with different food, test tube number 1 will have the food that is the controlled variable.
This experiment is very related to what we are studying now because we are studying biomolecules and this experiment is to test foods for biomolecules.
The question is asking which food will have each biomolecule so it related to testing for biomolecules and we are studying biomolecules.
