Theme
This book talks about some firemen who instead of stopping fire they started it if they discovered that people had books in their home.
Quotes
After montage finish one night with his job he found a girl and they started walking and talking about his job and then she asked:
“Do you ever read any of the books you burn?
He laughed. That’s against the law!” ( pg 8)
I think this quote is the one that explains the most the book and what is it about Montage answered as if the question was some kind of joke because everybody knew that books were prohibited.
“Strange. I heard once that a long time ago houses used to burn by accident and they needed firemen to stop the flames” (pg 8)
This are the kind of firemen we know and the way things were supposed to be instead of them starting the fire, but firemen starting the fire was normal at that city but that doesn’t mean it was right that was just what the law said.
Clarisse and montage talked every day, till one day he was gone but everything she said made montage question his job and what was wrong with the books, one night the alarm sounded it was a hose of a woman who stayed inside her burning house she didn’t wanted to be saved she wanted to die so that made montage think even more
“There must be something in books, things we can’t imagine, to make a woman stay in a burning house; there must be something there. You don’t stay for nothing” (pg 51)
This kept Montage thinking what was about the books that people love to read so much
“Plant the books, turn in the alarm, and see the firemen’s houses burn, is that what you mean?”(pg85)
This was Montage and Faber’s plan, to make more books to read to destroy the fireman’s houses
