Capitulo 2: Logística y tecnología de la información
Professor Steven Alter mentions six different types of information systems that are important for all business functions. Some examples of its application in a business are:
- Office automation system: Provides ways to effectively process personal and organizational data. Ex: Calculate optimal order quantities, transport cost minimization, facility location.
- Communication system: Helps stakeholders work more efficiently by interacting and sharing information in many different forms, such as: Virtual meetings via computer technology and voice-based order picking.
- Transaction processing system (TPS): Collects and stores information regarding transactions and may control some aspects of them as well. Example: Electronic data interchange and Automatic identification technologies such as bar codes.
- Management information system (MIS): Converts data into information for monitoring performance purposes. It’s often used by managers and executives. Example: Logistics information.
- Decision support system (DDS): Provides managers with information, models or analysis tools for decision making purposes. Example: Simulation and data mining.
- Enterprise system: It’s a data base which integrates information and data processing methods across multiple business functions. Example: Logistics modules of enterprise resource planning systems.
The internet it’s also a big influence on logistics and continues to expand during the twenty first century, the author explains that it’s not possible to present comprehensive discussion of the internet impact on the logistics discipline, however, three big specific influences are: online retailing, on-demand software and electronic procurement.
Information technology also comes with challenges, such as security concerns for the protection of personal data of users. And Is very important to know that information technology helps managers to address problems, however, it alone will not solve problems. It must be used as a tool or guide.
Analysis and conclusion
In this chapter explained six general types of information management systems which are very relevant to today’s business models. The importance of having these systems implemented in a business is crucial as it gives you a competitive advantage over those companies/businesses who doesn’t have them. The main point of each of them: Efficiency, each on a different level and all as important as the others.
The internet is also playing a role on logistics, and as it expands in the world (more users) so does its influence on logistics discipline.
Information technology also comes with challenges, such as security concerns for the protection of personal data of users. And employee resistance to the use of these technologies.
