United States Of America Position Paper.
Syria–United States relations are officially non-existent. Relations have been severed due to the Syrian Civil War. Priority issues between the two states include the Arab–Israeli conflict, the Golan Heights annexation, the Iraq War, and the Syrian civil war. According to the 2012 U.S. Global Leadership Report, through a poll conducted during the Syrian civil war, 29% of Syriansapprove of U.S. leadership, with 40% disapproving and 31% uncertain. Syria is considered to be a secular dictatorship with a poor human rights record. Syria has been on the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism since the list's inception in 1979 and deems it to be a “safe-haven” for terrorists. Syria rejects its classification by the U.S. as a state sponsor of terrorism.
Why should US care about Syria Crisis?
Over the past three years, we have witnessed state-sanctioned war crimes such as using chemical weapons, barrel bombs, the targeting of children, rape a refugee crisis. U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees has described Syria as “a disgraceful humanitarian calamity with suffering” and of course now, syria situation has been declared as a global security problem. The U.S. debate about Syria, specifically that what happens over there simply doesn’t matter here – that it can be “contained” within its borders and also that if US is going to get involved, it should be a minimum support, Conclusion President Obama seems to be reaching himself. Speaking this month at a news conference with French President Francois Hollande, Obama stated that Syria is now “one of our highest national security priorities.”
But such a realization will need to be coupled with a new Syria policy, including a more active U.S. role in assisting the rebels. As The Economist argued in an editorial last month:
It’s important to remember that the only time al-Assad has made a serious concession has been in the context of the sarin gas attack, when the threat of force produced last September’s chemical weapons agreement. There are lessons here for the future.
US should be involved an help people on syrian an US is right when they said that a new president should be on syria, because clearly it isn’t working out well for Syria. Hoping this conflict will disappear simply because it has fallen out of the headlines is wishful thinking. Syria is already the biggest moral and humanitarian catastrophe of the 21st century. But it has now morphed into a major global security crisis, one that isn’t going away.
Topic A : Cessation of armed violence in all its forms:
The unrest began in March 2011 in Daraa, at first with protests, but a violent response from the government and subsequent clashes left dozens of opposition protesters and at least 7 policemen dead. In April 2011, the Syrian Army was deployed to quell the uprising
