Animal Farm, a satire of Stalin’s regime
George Orwell’s Animal Farm a fairy story, or so described in the first page of the book by Orwell himself, is an incredible novel that presents a genius yet simple form to explain Joseph Stalin’s government in Russia. This short novel has created so much controversy around the world, it has even toped the lists of banned books in the world. Anyhow this literary masterpiece is essential to explain the regime of the Bolshevik leader and former Russian dictator Joseph Stalin, its simple yet meaningful content helps the reader achieve awareness towards the Russians situation back then. But most importantly, it criticizes the reality of a country that was trying to overcome inequality and reestablish a form of government that oppressed the great majority. Animal Farm is a satire of life in Russia under the regime of Stalin, through the abuse of power from Napoleon, manipulation of propaganda, and animals’ ignorance, Orwell refutes the idea of a totalitarian government and communism itself.
Orwell illustrates through various ways the abuse of power from Napoleon, to make the reader comprehend the implications that a totalitarian government has on a country and its people. One of the cases in which the reader is capable of appreciating this is when Napoleon limits the resources for the rest of the animals, but has a luxurious life himself. A great example of this case is when Napoleon receives as a bonus food the apples; he intends to demonstrate they are necessary for his work and a great source of food that will help him develop his difficult task as a leader, efficiently. Clearly the reader understands through Orwell’s portray of reality the injustice and abuse of power Stalin had in his own regime, and may apply this simple example to a much more conflictive situation lived in Russia. The second case that evidences Napoleons’ abuse of power is when he makes the animals work very hard to benefit him. As an example of this
