Functions of the PC

A computer performs a series of steps in a sequential manner upon receipt of a user request. The following diagram shows in a diagram the functions that a computer executes:

The information processing cycle performed by a computer can be summarized in the following four basic functions:

  1. Accept entries. An entry is any type of data that we introduce to the computer as: words and symbols of a document, numbers to perform calculations, instructions to perform processes, images, sounds, etc. Different devices like the keyboard, mouse and / or microphone are used so that the computer receives the inputs.

  1. To process data. It consists of manipulating the data in different ways to: perform calculations, modify words and images, order or alter the order of the data. The computer uses a device called the Processing Unit. This unit contains two main elements:
  • Central Processing Unit [CPU]).
  • System Memory.

  1. Store data and information. The computer must store data to be available during processing. The place where they will be stored depends on how the data is used. For example, in the System Memory (within the Processing Unit) the computer stores what it is using. There is another type of storage, which is more permanent, where you save what you do not need to process at that time (eg: diskettes, CD, hard disk).
  2. Produce outputs. They are the results generated by the computer. Some examples of results are: reports, documents, graphics, images, etc. Devices such as the monitor, printer, speakers are used.

Probably, the question that comes to mind now is: how does a computer know what to do? There are two essential elements in computers:

  • the hardware that are the physical components, and
  • the software that are the programs.
