APGO's mission is to protect the public by regulating geosciences in Ontario and advancing professional practice. How will you work towards this mission and be an ambassador for the association.
To make sure the public is protected it is really important provide my services as geologist based in the code of professional ethics and conduct. Based on the above I would like to present some ideas to follow and achieve the mission of APGO.
• Education and Training: The practice of geology requires me to have the knowledge and skills necessary to successfully perform the tasks that are assigned to me. Therefore training and constant updating are essential not only to update knowledge and implement new theories and technologies but also to develop skills for a better understanding of the problems and needs and thereby contribute to the development of society.
• Promotion of the APGO certification: Talk about the certification with my co-workers -who don’t have the certification yet- and explain them how important is the understanding and application of the principles of geoscience, and that concerns the safeguarding of the welfare of the public, life, health or property, including the natural environment, and who meets the requirements of membership in the APGO.
• Ethic work: The code of ethics of APGO establishes the principles of integrity, competence and devotion to work. As a geologist I would always act with honesty and loyalty to my profession I would always express my opinion with fundaments and knowledge, also respecting and sharing ideas of others and give credit where necessary, with the idea of always looking for the safety and welfare of the public.
• Sustainable development: I would encourage the development of practices that promote health; also the protection of the environment and excellence in the practice of geology to ensure sustainable use of natural resources.
• Legislation: It is really important to know, understand and respect the legislation. As the APGO definition says: “The legislation protects the public and investors and from here we have to consider this as our main concern. by establishing a regulated association of geoscientists with the power to admit only qualified persons, to encourage continuing professional competence, to discipline members for professional misconduct and to prevent unqualified individuals from practising.”
• Privacy of the information: I would protect the information that others and I use and generate always considering the people before my interest.
