Have you ever been through a situation that made you change a particular point of view you had about life? Well, it has happened to me.
I used to be someone who was really selfish. I cared about no one else but me. The thing is that it was just a normal day for me. I was walking on my way to work as usual. A few blocks from work there was a little boy who used to sell candies and cookies at the corner. He usually begged for coins or food too. I reached that particular corner and saw this boy. He looked and me and said: Would you like some candies, sir? My answer was a total NO! Then he came again: “What about some cookies?” My answer again was NO!! He insisted and asked again: Do you have a coin you could give me? As I said, I was a really selfish person and never cared about people and even less about people who lived on the street and I just wanted to get rid of that boy so I took a two- pound bill and a small key holder with the shape of a car from my pocket, gave them to him and left.
Some time went by and I used to see that boy in that corner but after a few months I did not see him anymore. I just thought he moved to another corner. One cold evening, I was at home and I heard someone knocking at my door. It was an old woman. She introduced herself saying that she was this little boy’s grandmother and she came to tell me that he was at the hospital. He had a really strong stomachache one day and fell on the street. The doctor told her that his situation was really serious and that he needed a kidney transplant otherwise he would die. I could not understand why she came to me; I did not know that kid. She told me that that day at the hospital she saw him playing with a small car. It seemed to be really important to him, maybe because it was his most important possession or the only one he had ever got. She asked him how he got that car and he said that it was a present from a good friend of him. After explaining this, she asked me for help. She looked really desperate and begged me. She asked me to help her find someone who could donate a kidney for him. After saying this, she left my house crying. I was really angry about that woman’s request. How could that woman come to my door and ask for such a thing? Who was her to do that? Who did she think I was?
A few days went by and I could not stop thinking about that boy. That feeling of anger disappeared and I started to feel that I had to do something to change his situation. I called a lot of people trying to find a kidney but the only answer I could get was NO, the only answer I used to give whenever someone asked me for something. I was desperate about this. That boy could die and I felt responsible about it. After spending some time thinking I found no other solution but to give one of my kidneys. I went out and looked for that woman to tell her about my decision. The next day, we went together to the hospital to do all the preparation for the surgery.
