Leonardo Da Vinci: The Man That Made History
The Renaissance was one of the greatest eras of all time in history. It is the time that changes were made, Europe was modernizing, and new ideas were offered by people that will make history. Literature, art techniques, and architecture were the new progress rising quickly to another whole new level. At the time, Europe had found a man that would make history with his art, impressive skills, and interesting writings. His ambition towards knowing everything made him become one of the most known men during the era his name was: Leonardo Da Vinci.
Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci was an influential writer, philosopher, inventor, and painter during the period of the renaissance. He was born in April 15, 1452 near the city of Tuscan near Vinci where he grew up with his parents Caterina and Piero Fruosino Di Antonio da Vinci. Leonardo was a genius kid with excellent abilities that later he would develop by his ambitions of how life was created. At a young age his family moved to Florence where his father would set him into art and sculpting classes where he became apprentice of Andrea del Verrocchio. His imagination and ambitions of knowing everything became a “hobby” as he started working on large projects that would lead him to success but also failure.
Many of Leonardo’s writing were focus on description and new ideas. However, Leonardo did not learn to write in Greek he wrote in Latin but in his very own unique way. As he was left handed, something unusual at the time, he wrote in a mirror way of writing. This type of writing was started from right to left, it was something difficult to read, but he had the idea of making it very unique that it will take time for others. In fact, the Roman Catholic Church pointed that his writings were codes because he did not agree with their ideas of life. There are some theories that his works are actual codes that hide secrets about Jesus Christ. The theory became such a scandal that in today’s world many authors and analysts around the world had written about this, and many haven’t had a conclusion about it. Amazingly, Da Vinci’s writings had influence even in the world of Hollywood where several movies and a TV series were created: Angels and Demons, The Code of Da Vinci, and Da Vinci Demons.
Leonardo had several journals which they held all the information, sketches, and inventions he worked on. After his death in May 2, 1519 in France his journals where held to his follower Francesco Melzi he took care of his writings until the day of his death. The writings were sold to all kinds of people and some part of Da Vinci had been lost forever. Regardless of the lost, there were some works that were recovered and about 13,000 pages were handled to put into codices. There are a varierty of manuscprits: Codex of Arundel, Codex of Atlanticus, Codex of Flights of Birds, Codex of Leicester, Codex of Madrid, Codex of Trivulzianus, and Codex of Urbinzas. These manuscripts were never sold or show while he was still alive until the 19th century that people started knowing about them and people started recognizing him for his intellectuals.
One of the most known is Codex of Atlanticus which contains subjects like mathematics, geometry, astronomy, botany, zoology, and military arts. This book contains over 1,000 pages and has over 12 volumes and it is held at Ambroslana Library in Milan, Italy. However, this book contains artifacts that were invented before any other man in history. Its sketches and descriptions of robots, submarines, helicopters, projectiles, etc. makes possible for others to analyze and inspire from it. The creations inspired Nasa to make anthrobots based on his unique anatomy sketches and creative robotics. Even though his jobs was not always accurate he still tried very hard to make the impossible possible. That is what makes Da Vinci different than other inventors.
Codex of Arundel was one of the many writings sold and found by the Royal Society. The manuscript contains about 200 pages and is mainly made up of geometry, science, and some architecture. Leonardo was so inspired by Egypt’s engineering design that his conclusion was that thanks to math the calculations were more precisive and helpful. In fact, the study of geometry helped Da Vinci paint “Last Supper” were he used his math by leveling the eyes in the painting process. With his geometry experience he made a figure called Rhombicuboctaheron which was then published in 1509 and calle “Divine Proportione” by Luca Pacioli. Leonardo’s book is now held at British Library at London were it is carefully taking care of.
The Codex of Flight of the Birds is the shortest of all of them. Leonardo’s somehow enjoy watching birds and birds help him create and feel what other things in nature couldn’t. The manuscript basically talks about birds’ behavior and the connection with aviation. There are four divisions in it: flights by beating their wings, flight without beating wings and help of the wind, flights in general, and at last it mechanism of movements. Each section contains Leo’s vision and how he analyze humans and birds movement in order to create one his flying machines. On the other hand, in the TV series “Da Vinci Demons” you can enjoy in an episode where he buy all the birds to set them free and observe their reaction, movements, and beauty. It seemed that Leonardo did enjoy nature and he did inspire himself of it.
The Codex of Leicester is the only document of Da Vinci that is for the public to see; it was bought by Bill Gates in 1995. The document contains information about astronomy, geology, hydrology, and hydraulics. Basically, this document contains 64 pages of Leonardo’s theories most of them are of astronomy. In his writings he uses math equations and calculations of the moon and the sun. He also describes how the nature of water flows, rivers and oceans. He mentions that other authors in his writings but doubts about their theories. Leonardo made his own theories and wrote them down many of them became proven right over the years. This document is the most complete of all, Leonardo talks about the nature beauty in a constructive and amazing way.
The Codex of Madrid I & II contains 197 pages of geometry and mechanisms. The codices were found in 1964 at La Biblioteca Nacional
