Concepcion
Climate
The climate of Concepción is classified as Köppen Csb, with a dry summer nadir in February. Despite the Csb classification, the climate is generally considered oceanic, because for most of the year it resembles an oceanic climate. The cool waters of the Pacific Ocean help to maintain mild temperatures throughout the year.
Demographics
According to data collected on 2002 in the Census of the National Institute of Statistics, the township has an area of 221.6 km2 (86 sq mi) and a population of 216,061 inhabitants, of whom 103,860 are men and 112,201 are women.
Cultural life
To an outsider, there may be confusion between the demonyms of the inhabitants of Concepción and the nearby city of Penco. Due to the previous location of Concepción being where Penco currently stands, inhabitants of Concepción are called penquistas while inhabitants of Penco are known as pencones.
Concepción is one of the most active cities in Chilean rock music and many famous rock groups in Chile started up in Concepción.
Economy
Historically characterized by a strong manufacturing industry, Concepión has also been a major center for distribution and services and the financial basis of the regional economy.
Chillan
Climate
Chillán has a mediterranean climate (Köppen climate classification Csa). Winters are cool but mild with a July average of 8.5 °C(47.3 °F). Most of the precipitation falls during this time of the year with May to July being the wettest months, averaging over 200 millimetres (8 in). Summers on the other hand are dry and warm with a January average of 22.4 °C (72.3 °F) and during this time, precipitation is rare, averaging only 2-3 days per month from December to February.
Demographics
According to the 2002 census by the National Statistics Institute, the commune of Chillán spans an area of 511.2 km2 (197 sq mi) and has 161,953 inhabitants (77,007 men and 84,946 women). Of these, 148,015 (91.4%) lived in urban areas and 1,938 (8.6%) inrural areas. The population grew by 8.3% (12,442 persons) between the 1992 and 2002 censuses.
Administration
As a commune, Chillán is a third-level administrative division of Chile administered by a municipal council, headed by an alcalde who is directly elected every four years. The 2008-2012 alcalde is Sergio Zarzar Andonie (ILE).
Economy
This area has great potential for intensive cultivation especially productive. The main products are: wheat, sugar beet, corn, rice, beans, potatoes, wonder, barley and oats.
