Exploring Social Media
It took the radio 38 years to get 50 million users, while the TV reached this in 13 years. In contrast, the Internet got 50 million users in just 4 years but, in less than a year, Facebook added over 200 million users around the world. Social Media has achieved the interaction among people around the world by creating, sharing and exchanging information using the internet. Also, it has more usability, frequency and permanence than traditional media. As a result, social media affects the way how people live and act, so there are three areas where it has generated interesting effects: Social Life, Education and Business.
One effect of social media is in social life. While there are people who met in social meetings or through common friends and got married in the traditional way, many married couples met using social media. For example, a study in the U.S. showed that, until 2006, 1 in 8 married couples met using websites like www.match.com. That means that an approximate 12% of the people in the United States feel comfortable meeting another one by internet before a face-to-face meeting, so they can “choose” who will match with their. Facebook is a good example of that kind of social media because there are over 200 million users and it lets you upload pictures and express “what you are thinking”. This shows a big possibility to know “how it is going” with your friends, but people must be careful and not take away the people who are with them (husband or wife, parents, etc.) by spending valuable time on Facebook. Therefore, social life through social media is a good way to meet people around the world or keep in touch with your friends.
Not only has social media impacted social life, but also education is an effect of it. Recently, the performance of online students compared with classroom students can be startling. According to a report of the U.S. Department of Education, online students got better results than face-to-face students. That shows a clear example of “learning by doing”, making possible to obtain great grades through a creative and innovate environment that is totally different of the mostly passive and traditional way to learn. Besides, education can be impacted by using virtual libraries to get information. For example, it is possible to find by Wikipedia or on Google millions of articles, papers, essays, etc. That means people don`t need to go to the library if they need to research a specific topic. Just by searching on the web, the information could be in their hands in seconds. Consequently,
