Mamma Mia! is based on the songs of ABBA. ABBA was a Swedish pop/dancegroup active from 1972–1982 and was one of the most internationally popular pop groups of all time, topping the charts again and again in Europe, North America and Australia. Following the premiere of the musical in London in 1999, ABBA Gold topped the charts in the United Kingdom again. This musical was the brainchild of producer Judy Craymer. In 1997, Craymer commissioned Catherine Johnson to write the book for the musical. In 1998, Phyllida Lloyd became the director for the show.

Sophie Sheridan is a twenty-year-old resident girl in the hotel of her mother, placed in a Greek island, who is on the verge of marrying Sky . Her mother, Donna, has never said to her who is her father.
When Sophie finds the old diary of her mother, she finds the address of three men who might be her father and decides to invite them to her wedding without her mother finds out.
Everything gets complicated when they come to the island and they meet Sophie and Donna, the last one supported by her two best friends, Rosie and Tanya
All together they will try to solve the mystery of the one who is the real father of Sophie and who will give the bride away

The show currently has productions in the West End of London and on Broadway in New York City as well as various international productions. A typical performance runs for approximately two hours and 30 minutes, plus a 15-minute intermission.
