I remember the first time I went to Madrid. The city was just stunning with soaring building everywhere. You may think that it doesn´t look like a capital from an European country. When you explore this city you can see that not everything is as it seems. The lack of history vanishes after you see a magnificent cathedral or a museum. It looks like in this place the history and the modernity can live in a perfect harmony because has the best of both world. Madrid is a wonderful city and you need to visit a least once.
Madrid is a city with a very big catholic influence and because of that it has a lot of churches and cathedrals. The Church of San Antonio de los Alemanes also known as San Antonio de los Portugueses is a good example of it. It´s “Bien de Interés Cultural” since 1973 and it´s also distinguish for the baroque decoration. Other one is the Church of San Andrés. It´s locate southwest from the Plaza Mayor. Because of Phillip IV the church was rebuilt with a beautiful chapel dedicated to San Isidro Labrador. Near the Church of San Andrés is the San Isidro Cathedral. This Cathedral remained almost unchanged after the Civil War. The last it is the Church of the Monastery of the Salesas Reales alias Santa Bárbara. From the outside you can contemplate the statues of St. Francis de Sales and St. Jeanne de Chantal. These statues were sculpted by Alfonso Giraldo Bergaz, a famous Spanish sculptor. In the interior holds the tomb of Ferdinand VI and his wife.
Madrid is a city of important squares. Puerta Del Sol is one of the best known in the capital. This holds the famous clock which bells sounds twelve times to mark the begging of the New Year. This place is very important to the Madrilenian. People around the world come to celebrate with costumes, wigs and a lot of music. Around the squared you can go shopping. There are important brands such as “Desigual”, “Zara” and “El Corte Inglés”. Plaza Colón or Columbus Square is other important place. It has two monuments. One is a statue of the explorer and the other one is macro-sculptures. Next it is Plaza de Cibeles which has become the iconic symbol of the city. This square has a fountain, named after the Roman goddess of fertility. The last one is the Plaza Mayor. This is the central square in Madrid and the most important. The Plaza Mayor is a rectangular shape surrounded by three historical buildings. In the center of the square it is a bronze statue of King Phillip III.
Madrid has abundant museums. One of them is the Prado Museum. This one is considerate one of the most important and greatest art galleries in the world. It´s located in central Madrid, specifically in the Paseo Del Prado Street. This museum has one of the best collections of European art. Next it is the Spanish Army Museum.
