Photobook-making is at its nascent stage in India. Very few Indian photographers, other than the big names, are getting their work published. Internationally, publishers such as Steidl, Schaden, Daylight, Mörel Books, TBW Books, MACK and several others have been publishing photobooks and successfully exhibiting these in various photofestivals and art fairs, such as Paris-Photo, New York Art Book Fair, Fotobookfestival Kassel, Unseen (Amsterdam) and more.

Emerging photographers have not had easy access to book publishers in the past, but the proliferation of smaller publishers, as well as the ability to self-publish, has changed the photography bookmaking industry. While self-published books are not new, the sophistication and aesthetics of these photobooks has taken the photo world by storm. As an example, out of the twenty books onlast year’s Paris-Photo/ Aperture First Book shortlist, fourteen were self-published.

This workshop is aimed at introducing photographers to the process of creating a handmade photobook based on a narrative project that they have been working on.

Project to Book Project: Workshop with Kosuke Okahara

Emaho Magazine for the first time in India launches a handmade photobook-making workshop, with the Japanese photographer and bookmaker, Kosuke Okahara.

The workshop will be held in Kolkata from 22nd to 25th April, 2014 and in Chennai from 29th April to 2nd May, 2014.

WHO SHOULD APPLY

The workshop is addressed to both students and professionals keen to make their photography project into a photobook. Projects can be of any nature, personal or social, landscape, etc.

The purpose of the workshop is to educate photographers about the possibility of disseminating and exhibiting their work through the physical medium of photobooks. While the key takeaway from this workshop will be a physical photobook, participants will also be exposed to the importance of the photobook in global photography festivals.
