The idea of progress contributes to making the world a better place: people can become happier in terms of quality of life, through economic development, and the application of science and technology. But this advanced technology is also being questioned. India, for example, is an emerging country that in the last decades has progressed, having their high-tech cities and an increasing economy that put them on the march. But even though that this is a country that has evolve and is a reference all around the world, is this a country with a happy population? Does technological or economic progress imply social progress? In the first place we can see how is India a country on the march, then the fact that it is an example all around the world and finally why is it a country of contradictions.
Organization of your presentation (based on your main questions and in three parts + examples taken from the documents studied in class to illustrate your arguments):
I. A country on the march
-India is a country that has an increasing economy that is developing and progressing with the years.
According to the Indian Finance Ministry the annual growth rate of the Indian economy is projected to have increased to 7.3% in 2014-15 as compared with 6.9% in the fiscal year 2013-14.
The country is one of the G-20 major economies, a member of BRICS and a developing economy among the top 20 global traders.
India was the 19th-largest merchandise and the 6th largest services exporter in the world; it imported a total of $616.7 billion worth of merchandise and services in 2013, as the 12th-largest merchandise and 7th largest services importer.
-In the cinema world, India is also a big referring of the filmmakers. One of the big referent of Indian cinema industry is Bollywood, based in Mumbai India. It is one of the largest film producers in India and one of the largest centers of film production in the world.
Perhaps the biggest influence of Bollywood has been on nationalism in India itself, where along with rest of Indian cinema, it has become part and parcel of the 'Indian story'.
Hits all around the world: “Bond it like Beckham”, “Slumdog millionaire”
-Over the last two decades, the country has emerged as an economic powerhouse with a high annual GDP growth rate. Entrepreneurial vigor, technological advancements in industry and high-value exports have contributed to the surge; alongside, domestic markets continue to expand.
No city exemplifies India's growth potential better than Bangalore. The 'science and technology capital of India,' houses some of the leading institutions in the world such as the Indian Institute of Science, Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), and a range of corporations engaged in Information Technology, Biotechnology, Life Sciences, Avionics, Engineering and Machine Tools, both in the public and private sectors. The broad economic base includes apparel, pharmaceutical companies, and extends to a vibrant Small & Medium Enterprises sector. The city is cosmopolitan, culturally diverse and is considered one of the best cities in the world for management education. Bangalore is a good laboratory for understanding trends in any sector.
II. An example all around the world
- The economy progress is not the only thing that distinguish India from the others countries. India for example has the largest democracy in the world.
One of the few countries that has survived the past century without any military takeover or collapse. So, it is the only country that since it independence doesn’t have any interruptions in it democracy.
It is one of the only democracies that since it “creation” it accepts any religion and women.
And this democracy has the largest number of habitants with 1.5 billion of people.
-It has the largest religion in the world, but not an ordinary religion: a religion that promotes the peace all around the world: the Hinduism.
It is the oldest religion in the world dated of a thousand years ago.
