The hidden message
50 million people visit zoos every year in United States, but… How many people who like animals and have the chance to visit these zoos, don’t actually go?
Ladies and Gentleman, my name is Francisco Jose Barberis and I’m going to talk about the problem of animals being kept in zoos.
What do we know about animals?
They may be found in any habitat of the world, rainforest, deserts, artic places and many more, they have instincts, such as mating or hunting and traveling as well!
If you have this in mind, then you can now realize what zoos take away from animals.
Changing their habitat definitely changes their way of living for the worse, For ex: Last year, a Polar bear died in Buenos Aires because of the high temperature, this kind of animal lives in very cold environments, and Buenos Aires temperature in Bs As was 50 degrees celcious, so one night, he couldn’t just stand the environment, and gave up, without anything to do to change that hard destiny he got. This is cruelty, just think of how much this animal suffered.
Another Zoo function is to “Prevent animals from extinction”, Polar Bears, ARE in danger of extinction, SO how could they let him die? It makes no sense AT ALL.
Many people will say that Zoos are great for knowing animals we may never see in our whole life, but, what they don’t realize is that animals act totally different in their natural habitat than in Zoo cages. Think of this, would we visit a prison to know how humans act naturally?... Definitely not, so we must be sure of what we want to see.
Another very perturbing aspect is that when animals get into Zoos, they might never get out, by this I mean to their old habitat, this is because of the fact that they would never adapt, I mean they would not have their food served every day, and they would not be able to protect themselves from any predator or a hunter.
If zoos are meant to be educational.. They’ve failed on that, those little plaques which have pieces of information about animals are hardly even read and people just don’t care about them, they just want to see them and interact with them.
But people are wrong; I think zoos must show empty cages saying how much important the animals are to us, so we prefer them free and in high spirits, than them having disturbance and boredom. To show a better example of the world.
What can we really learn about wild animals if they aren’t in the wild?
If you think zoos are fun I would like to see you in one, captured in a cage, all lifelong and see if you still think it’s still enjoying. We can express ourselves, and that is what differentiates us from them as Benjamin Hoff once said: “Lots of people talk to animals.... Not very many listen, though.... That's the problem”., so they can’t express their discomfort for what they are coming through,
