2.- Mahatma Gandhi

Born in 1869, Mahatma Gandhi was an important figure in India’s fight for independence. At that time India was part of the British Empire. Britain had the monopoly on all salt sold in India and put a heavy tax on the price of it so most India’s couldn’t buy salt. It was Gandhi dream to free his country from British control. He organized peaceful marches non violent demonstrations and hunger striker to protest

One of the most famous of these marches was the Dandi Salt Mrch. Gandhi walked 386 kilometers from Sabarmati to a beach in Dandi. He started with 78 volunteers, but thousands more Indians joined him along the way.

When they go there. Gandhi began his protest. First he led his followers down to the edge of the ocean. Then he collected some wood and dry seaweed and built a fire. Next, the walked a few steps out into the ocean and poured a little water in a small bowl. He held it up for the thousands of people to see.

After that, he put the small bowl on top of the fire and everyone watched and waited. Slowly the fire evaporated the liquid in the bowl. Finally, Gandhi took the bowl off the fire and showed his followers the salt left at the bottom. With no violence, Gandhi demonstrated that Indians could have salt without paying the British salt tax – India is a vast peninsula surrounded by the ocean so they could have all the salt they wanted. India finally gained its independence more than 60 years ago.
