Day of Love and Friendship

February 14 was designated as holiday by 1969, when the Roman Catholic Calendar dedicated that time to remind two Christian Saints, one of them Valentine, martyred by the Roman Emperor Claudio II. The story tells that Valentine was sacrificed because he devoted himself to marry couples even though the Emperor had banned it. Apparently, the Roman leader had the belief that married soldiers were not so good and efficient as singles. In addition, in ancient Rome, February 15 is celebrated the day of fertility or lupercalia, in honour of the God Lupercus. Over the centuries a series of legends and traditions have conjugate and today on February 14, Valentine's day is a date dedicated to friends and lovers; a date that are exchanged messages and gifts to show love and friendship to the closest beings. Although this as other dates have been marketed and seem to invite us to consumerism, Christians can use to reflect on what they mean these two values, so important in human relationships: love and friendship.Who was Saint Valentine? It was a Holy priest in Rome who, together with San Mario and his family, helped the martyrs during the persecution of Claudio II. He was arrested and sent by the emperor to the prefect of Rome, he saw that all his promises to make him renounce his faith were useless, ordered that they beat him with clubs and then beheaded him, on 14 February the year 269. He was buried on the Via Flaminia and a basilica was built in the year 350. Most of his relics are now in the Church of Santa Praxedes. The Saxon tradition of young people to choose as promised on this day, is probably based on the popular belief that are recounted in the literature since the time of Chaucer (1340-1400), that birds began to form couples, Valentine's day. The sending of cards was a natural evolution of the custom. One of the oldest references to such custom dates back to 1477.

Human relations one of the most beautiful features of the people is the ability to communicate and relate to others. Man is a being in a relationship, as it is God: is a single God in three different people, who relate among themselves with a perfect love that flows between them. Did you noticed that the more you open and you communicate with others, you feel better and more accomplished? This is because to relate with others enriches us, especially when that relationship is sincere and with the desire to give to the other. It becomes something very strange in human relations; and this you can check it: the more we give, more receive and what is not, is lost. In the "have" accumulate, fighting against others; in the "being" we are enriched, giving ourselves to others. There are many forms of human relationships, in this case, we are interested in relationships that have to do with love: include family relationships, friendship, of courtship and those of spouses.
