German entrepreneur and businessman
Born on 17 July 1821 in Mannheim
In 1847 at the age of 26, Engelhorn opened a goldsmith’s shop in his hometown
In 1848 his business began to suffer from economic problems.
He produced and sold bottled gas, which was used for lighting pubs and workshops
In 1856 William Perkin discovered that tar could be used to make synthetic dyes from aniline
Engelhorn founded a small aniline and dyestuff factory
In 1861 he started producing fuchsin
With several partners he founded the “Badische Anilin- & Soda-Fabrik” (BASF) on 6 April 1865.
In 1873 a sales office was set up in New York.
In 1876 a production site in Butirki near Moscow was opened.
After quarrels with his partners, in 1885 Engelhorn left the company.
In 1883 he had already bought the medical firm ’’Boehringer und Söhne’’ in Mannheim.
Engelhorn was member of the supervisory boards of other companies like the ’’Deutsche Zelluloidfabrik’’.
On 11 March 1902 Friedrich Engelhorn died in Mannheim.

The production center has more than 2000 buildings, 115 km of streets and approximately 211 km train rail road.
BASF produces a wide range of chemical products, from cosmetics going through plastics, paints and farming.
In Chile BASF arrived in 1910 to Santiago
Mainly focused in health, nutrition, colorants, chemicals, plastics and fibers
In 1959 changed his name to “Anilquimica, anilinas y productos quimicos Ltda.”
In 1988 BASF adopted its actual name, BASF Chile Ltda.
