JULIA DE BURGOS
(1914 - 1953)
Poet, playwright and Puerto Rican educator. Born in the Barrio Santa Cruz, in Carolina, Puerto Rico. He died in New York, United States. His work can be characterized by an enormous capacity to project the femininity of your time. But also for the personal, both of your busy life and sometimes, even turbulent, and the intuition of his impending death.
His family was large and poor, but his parents were concerned about the education of their children. In the Barrio Santa Cruz, Julia attended primary school. From childhood he showed great intelligence. In city conducts Carolina high school. Completed high school, he entered the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras campus. However, his studies ended, though, before leaving, he obtained Master Certificate.
Since its inception in teaching was devoted to poetic creation. One of his early poems was the famous "Rio Grande de Loiza". By that time, he got in touch with some of the Puerto Rican modernist poets like Luis Llorens Torres and Luis Pelés vanguard Evaristo Rivera Matos and Chebremont. In his poetry reflects his vital issue in all its aspects: feminism, a busy life and love in its multiple dimensions, sometimes with attractive simplicity, but more often on a love note highly sensuous, erotic and heartbreaking . In 1940, Julia Brugos traveled to New York. This season was very active, both in recitals of his own poetry, as in speeches at various cultural centers, often invited by Puerto Ricans living in this metropolis.
He left the United States to go to Cuba, joining Dr. Jimenes Grullon, and where he continued his lectures and projects poetic production. He could easily identify with the Cuban people, but he discovered the emerging deadly cancer that affected his life and his poetry.
Soon he had to leave Cuba, because it happened the hasty breakup with her lover, Dr. Jimenes Grullon. So he went out of Cuba to go back to New York. He met there the musician Armando Marin. They married and moved to Washington. In this city he met briefly poet laureate Juan Ramón Jiménez ..
He returned to New York, but his literary activity shrank much, because, besides cancer and mental instability, he was addicted to alcohol and as a result, he developed a strong liver cirrhosis. This led to an early death.
In view of his literary reputation and prestige in 1987 Humacao University College awarded him an honorary doctorate in Letters, "Post Mortem".
