I have chosen civil engineering as my profession because I like to design and build all kind of buildings. I have done this all my life using Legos. Even now thanks to technology I can do that on AutoCAD, a computer program used for advanced designing in less time, but it is less fun too. One day at high school teachers told me the results of my ideal job test, they gave me three options from which to decide what I could choose. I could have chosen my mother´s career: accounting administration but I do not understand accounting processes, also, I could have studied to be a doctor but my knowledge about medicine is not very good. Civil engineering was the option I liked best and my uncle had given me good references about it too.
My uncle Robert is the reason of my choice, he is a civil engineer. I went to his job almost every day last vacations. I understood everything and I liked all things he did. I was very excited the first time I went to a real construction with him. I was his partner. He taught me useful things on how to do everything easier, unfortunely, it was only one day. That day I learnt the risks of this profession for example, you could fall from very high or you could make a miscalculation which could destroy the work done before. I used to think that designing buildings was easy. However after my work practices I realized it is more difficult. First, you study the condition of the ground where you are going to build something. Second, you calculate how heavy the construction will be. Third, constructions need components you can not forget to include such as beams, dices, columns, plinths and braces. Fourth there is a different kind of slabs for every wall. I used to like the part of drawing more and I hated the part of constructing, now it is totally different, I hate drawing plans, especially the structural, because there are thousands of measures, hundreds of details, several prints and last but not least you need much patience. I like building most because I do not calculate anything, I just buy the materials and construct it with my colleagues. The worst part of this is you work every day for almost a month, the best part is the reward.
Civil engineering is important because it works on the design, construction, and maintenance of infrastructure located on the surroundings including roads, bridges, canals, airports or other constructions related. In Ecuador, this career is the most chosen one even though there are not many opportunities. Currently almost all teenagers want to be engineers or architects, so, universities can not offer none of those careers forcing young people to study another profession. Though it helps our country to progress, it is not nice for people who really want to study something, know that maybe you would not be able to choose what you want and, to make matters worse, perhaps you work on something you hate. if I am lucky, I will have the opportunity to finish my
