Background
Billabong is an Australian clothing company surfing, skateboarding and snowboarding. It is currently one of the giants of the extreme sports industry with Quiksilver and Rip Curl.
The name comes from "Billa", in English "creek" and in Castilian "stream"; and "bong" English "dead" and in Castilian "dead".
Billabong was created in 1973 in the Gold Coast of Queensland, Australia, and its founder Gordon Merchant. The company started manufacturing swimsuits to practice professional surfing and bathing suits for leisure. In view of the good results and great local reputation that was forged in 1977, Billabong began to manufacture various types of clothing such as shirts or influence surfer pants.
In 1983 the Australian company broke into the US market and established in 1985 in New Zealand in 1987 in Europe and in Latin America in 2001 with Brazil as the country of distribution.
Symbol: The brand logo symbolizes the waves framed in a frame. Since its inception Billabong has used the same symbol, but has been combining colors and designs combination of brand and logo in different seasons.

Billabong today is present in over 100 countries across North America, Caribbean area, South America, Europe, Middle East, Asia, Africa and Australia. Has, as of June 2004, 1,386 employees worldwide. Its product manufacturing bases reside in disparate countries such as China, Vietnam, Australia, South Korea, Fiji, Mexico and currently in Chile, Antofagasta. One of its biggest distribution center is located in Hong Kong, which provides most of the material to Oceania and also in Peru for the quality of the raw material.
The Billabong International Group turnover in 2005 more than one billion dollars. The June 30, 2005 sales totaled $ 841 million. In these sales come the four companies that were acquired by Billabong International property group: Element, Von Zipper, Kustom and Honolua
Billabong team is divided into:
- Surf: Andy Irons (surfing world champion in 2002, 2003 and 2004 and died in 2010), Joel Parkinson, Taj Burrow, Mark Occhilupo and Shane Dorian, among others.
- Skate: its main star is the American professional skateboarder Bucky Lasek. Other large team of skaters are Ali Cairns Billabong or Chad Bartie.
- Snowboard: Andrew Crawford, Kale Stephens and Marius Otterstadt, among others
