Relations and Functions

• Relation: Any set of ordered pairs and can be expressed or represented by:

 Ordered Pairs (2, 3)

 Table

 Graphs

 Statement R&(a≠b→c≠d)

 Equation Y= X+2

 Diagrams

• Domain: The first number in a relation gives the value of “X”.

• Range: Is the second member in a relation, gives the value of “Y”.

• Constant: Symbol that represent a fixed value.

• Variable: Symbol that represent different values.

• Independent Variable: Can take any value of the domain of the relation.

• Dependent Variable: Variable whose universe of definition is the range of the relation

• Interval: Set of real numbers with the property that any number that lies between two numbers in the set is also included in the set. The notation and terminology of intervals in commonly used to describe the domain and range of a relation.

Examples:

Full dot = Greater or equal to, Less or equal to.

Empty Dot = Greater than, Less than.

The set of the real numbers greater or equal to -2 and less than 8
