Halitosis, or bad breath, is a condition that we deal very often. Its originated in the oral cavity, can be various causes : presence of caries, periodontal disease, bleeding or improper position of the teeth that prevents proper oral hygiene leaving food residue in the mouth. Another cause of bad breath is the reduced saliva in the mouth; is known as dry mouth. For centuries , the diagnosis and measurement of halitosis were made through a human evaluation , through the proper sense of smell, the smell of saliva or breath of the patient. This is a poor diagnosis , because a sense of smell that works normally becomes desensitized to the continuous odors.
Whether in the form of occasional bad breath that feels almost all healthy adult to get up in the morning, or in the form of more serious or severe problems, from metabolic disorders to lung tumors , it says that halitosis affects nearly 50 % of a population . Judging by the size of the market for sales of mouthwashes and other products against bad breath ( nearly one billion dollars in the United States according to the latest statistics), halitosis is a personal problem that worries many people .
As to the remedy against halitosis, the first thing is to try to detect its origin. As in most cases is associated with inadequate oral hygiene , begin to improve hygiene , brushing your teeth , gums and tongue after every meal , and also use dental floss and mouthwash to achieve areas that are not accessible with the brush. It is also necessary to visit the dentist regularly , at least once a year to prevent cavities and other dental conditions and to remove tartar . Quitting smoking , not drinking alcohol, and limiting consumption of foods that promote bad breath , such as garlic and onions, are the main avoidable risk factors . Among the most objective measures include the use of portable monitors sulfide gas chromatography flame photometric detectors , and mass spectrometers . As these measurement procedures range from the more limited but convenient to the most expensive and heavy , a lot of dental research is devoted to establish a correlation of lower cost for recognized clinical markers of halitosis.
