Aim: make predictions regarding the reaction of metals and observe how they react in water and hydrochloric acid.
Hypothesis: all predictions:
Reaction with water
- Zinc: would react vigorously with cold water
- Sodium: would react vigorously with water to produce alkaline metal hydroxide and hydrogen gas.
- Calcium: would react vigorously with water to form ionic bonds
- Copper: It won’t react
- Lead: it won’t react
- Iron: it would react poorly
- Magnesium: would react vigorously with water to form ionic bonds
Reaction with hydrochloric acid
- Zinc: would vigorously react and produce hydrogen
- Sodium: was not tested
- Calcium: was not tested
- Copper: would react poorly
- Lead: would produce little bubbles and react poorly
- Iron: would not react
- Magnesium: would not react
Materials:
- Hydrochloric acid
- Test tubes
- Test tube holder
- Water
- Metals
- Rack
Diagram:
Method: First, the teacher gave us all the instructions; we should observe and predict the reaction of metal in water and hydrochloric acid. We put our lab coat on and waited for Marcos to bring the material, meanwhile we were doing the prediction of what we were going to observe. We did the prediction of each metal in water and hydrochloric acid. With the material ready, we start putting the metals in water to see and take note of how it reacted. After taking notes and filling the table with our observations, Marcos brought us the hydrochloric acid to repeat the same process with it. After we filled our prediction and observation of each metal in water and hydrochloric acid, we helped to clean everything.
Results:
Reactivity list
- Potassium
- Sodium
- Calcium
- Magnesium
- Aluminum
- Carbon
- Zinc
- Iron
- Tin
- Lead
- Hydrogen
- Copper
- Silver
- Gold
- Platinum
What can you tell about a metal if it comes at the top of the list?
That is the most reactive metal of the periodic table and cannot be displace by other element
What can you tell about a metal if it comes at the bottom of the list?
That is the least reactive metal in the list and is displace by all the elements above it.
Observations:
Reaction with water
- Zinc: did not react with water molecules
- Sodium: it reacted vigorously and immediately with water, creating hydrogen and raised its temperature
- Calcium: it reacted vigorously and quickly with water, producing little bubbles, taking out hydrogen and raising its temperature.
- Copper: did not reacted, it stay the same
- Lead: didn’t react with water
- Iron: reacted poorly, just produced bubbles
- Magnesium: reacted poorly, just producing little air bubbles
Reaction with hydrochloric acid
- Zinc: it reacted producing bubbles and a gas (hydrogen)
- Sodium: was not tested
- Calcium: was not tested
- Copper: it didn’t react
- Lead: reacted poorly and formed hydrogen
- Iron: it didn’t reacted
- Magnesium: reacted vigorously and strongly, dissolving into the acid and raising its temperature
Conclusion: In conclusion, my hypothesis or predictions were right and were wrong. I did not expect certain things that happened, as well as some things that I expect to happen did not happen. Some predictions were right and some were wrong, anyone was completely accurate to the expected but near of it. So isn’t a correct or incorrect answer.
