THE WORLDWIDE WATER CRISIS

Water represents one of the most important natural resources for humanity, in the same way as for plants and other animals. The global water crisis puts the entire planet at risk, affecting aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems and, consequently, billions of people due to the lack of drinking water and inadequate sanitary conditions.

Water is a natural resource of economic, strategic and social value, as well as being essential for human existence and well-being and the maintenance of the planet's ecosystems. Despite the fact that the earth apparently has an enormous amount of water resources, the distribution of water on the planet is uneven.

It is estimated that 97.5% of the existing water in the world is salty or is not suitable for our direct consumption, nor for irrigating crops. Of the 2.5% of fresh water, most of it is difficult to access as it is concentrated in glaciers (69%) and stored in aquifers (30%), and only 1% is found in rivers and lakes. Of the latter, only a small part is available for human consumption. More than half of the world's rivers are polluted, causing clogging and a decrease in volume.

Statistics from the United Nations (UN) reveal that approximately 2.1 billion people do not have access to treated water and close to 2.4 billion lack adequate sanitation facilities. The lack of drinking water causes the death of 1.7 million infants per year, due to diseases such as cholera, dysentery and malaria

How can we save water?

  1. Close the faucets whenever you are not using them.
  2. Take a shower instead of a bath, a shower uses 50% less water. A 5-minute shower saves about 3,500 liters per month.
  3. Collect the water that comes out of the tap while you wait for it to heat up, and reuse it for watering, mopping the floor, washing clothes by hand, etc.
  4. Use pressure reducers for the shower in order to save water.
  5. Place 2 full bottles inside the cistern and you will save 2 to 4 liters each time you use it and do not use the toilet as a wastebasket.
  6. Thaw food in the fridge or at room temperature, but not under a running tap.
  7. If you have a garden, it is better to use native plants, so you will not exceed the use of water to irrigate. Also take advantage of collecting rainwater. Water your plants at dawn or dusk because this will prevent the water from evaporating before being absorbed. Don't hose down the floor, use a broom.
  8. Fix any water leaks right away: a dripping tap can cause up to 40 liters of water a day.
