How Our Family's Transition from Rural to City Life Shaped Us: The Urban Exodus

I recently had the opportunity of learning about our family's move from a peaceful rural area to the concrete jungle when I was a child during the calm hours I spent with my grandfather. It was an eye opening conversation that revealed the significant influence this move had on both our family dynamics and our personal life. I'd like to share this history with you today in order to explore the transforming process of our migration from the country to the city.

My childhood was characterized by open spaces, the calming sound of birds singing, and an intimate community where everyone knew each other's names because I grew up in a rural area. Living off the land and valuing the simplicity of rural life, our family had a long history in this community. As the years went by, however, the choice to move was made as the city's prosperity called.

The first significant effect of this migration was the change in the financial situation of our family. My grandfather said that the city offered an extensive variety of employment opportunities and improved economic possibilities. We had few employment options, mostly related to agriculture, in the rural area. The city, however, provided a greater number of employment opportunities, enabling my family members to pursue other professional routes and improve their living standards. Our everyday activities and priorities took an important adjustment as a result of this change, which also significantly improved our quality of life.

We were introduced to a more intense and stressful atmosphere by the urban way of life. In his reminiscences, my grandfather described how the peaceful mornings in the country were replaced by the noise of city life. We developed more strict schedules based on the requirements of job and school. The intense activity of metropolitan life replaced the tranquility of the countryside. The older members of our family, who had lived the majority of their lives in the quiet countryside, found this adjustment to be extremely difficult.

These difficulties still present amazing opportunities for development as a person. Access to education and cultural activities substantially grew in the city. My grandfather told memories of how members of our family enrolled in school and pursued higher education with energy. Our views expanded and our curiosity was caught by the city's multicultural population, which exposed us to different points of view.

In addition, moving to the city helped our family develop a sense of flexibility and endurance. From public transportation to the moving dynamics of city neighborhoods, we had to learn how to deal with every aspect of urban life. In the end it helped us become more flexible and open to transformation.
