SOCIOLOGY

  1. Define:
  • Daniel Levinson: undertook an intensive long-term study to determine the adult male development stages.
  • Life structure: is the combination of statuses, roles, activities, goals, values, beliefs, and life circumstances that characterize an individual.
  • Mentor: fosters a person’s development by believing in the person and helping the person achieve his or her dreams.
  • Esther Sales: have both done work that lends support to this argument about the differences he noted exist in men and women on development processes.
  • Labor force: consists of all individuals age 16 and older who are employed in paid positions or who are seeking paid employment.
  • Profession: is a high-status occupation that requires specialized skills and knowledge obtained through formal education.
  • Unemployment: is the situation that occurs when a person does not have a job but is actively seeking employment.
  • Gerontology: the scientific study of the processes and phenomena of aging
  • Alzheimer’s disease: an organic condition that results in the progressive deterioration of brain cells.
  • Dependency: the shift from being an independent adult to being dependent on others for physical or financial Assistance

In three basic eras of adulthood. They named these eras early adulthood, middle adulthood, late adulthood.

The theory of adulthood developed by Daniel Levinson in the 1970’s doesn’t really apply to adults today. Roles and statuses have changed between males and females, switching how they choose to live their lives.

According to Frieze and Sales, the patterns that distinguish adult female development from adult male development is that men are in the work force longer.

  1. How has the composition of the American labor force changed?

The nature of work has changed since the 1900’s, because now of days women work more than they use too. Men also stay home more commonly.

  1. What challenges and opportunities are associated with the later stages of life?

The challenges and opportunities that are associated with the later stages of life are physical and mental functioning, and retirement.

  1. How do you think the nature of work and the composition of the workforce will change over the next 25 years?

The women would have more opportunities.

  1. What job characteristics do you think contribute most to job satisfaction? How do different motivations and aspirations affect economic decisions? Age, abilities, and compromise
  2. How and why are social networks important when adjusting to retirement? The effect of social media on senior health and well-being has yet to be studied thoroughly, but it clearly allows for quick and easy contact with a wide variety of people, from distant friends to close family. Social media also allows retirees to share photos and videos with family members, and to create groups based on shared interests.
