TRANSPORTATION PROJECT
Introduction
For many people, commuting by car or by public transport is a daily necessity. People with their own cars use it to commute to work, to go shopping or to take the family out on weekends. For those who cannot drive or afford to buy their own vehicles, public transport provides these commuters with their only means of transport. However, it seems that it won't be too long before our society will have to resort back to the horse and buggy cart era if our politicians don't build better roads or resolve the ongoing oil crisis.
As a group, you will investigate different modes of transport and show how they have changed over time as technology has advanced. You will need to research how transport benefits us as individuals, and as citizens of a global community and what impacts transport systems have on our global environment.
Task and Process
The students will make groups of four students and one of three.
Each group will be responsible for gathering information on the topics: airplanes, bikes, cars, electric cars, trains and subways.
In addition, each group will work on a problem-solving dilemma where you will have to invent a transportation vehicle to solve the problem. To do this you have to make an open question couched in terms of TOK vocabulary and concepts: the areas of knowledge, the ways of knowing and the concepts in the linking questions—belief, certainty, culture, evidence, experience, explanation, interpretation, intuition, justification, truth, values.
Create a multimedia presentation about it.
Prepare and rehearse a five - nine minute presentation for the class.
You have to write a newspaper article explaining the problem and the possible solution of the topic.
Make a bibliography of the resources you used.
