or some years, nurses have been trying to develop the autonomous practice of nursing. Maybe as no other professional group, they have desired to turn the specialty into a scientific discipline. Great efforts have been made to delimitate a particular area of thinking that guides the practice, research, training and management in the field of nursing. To this end, a literature review was made to describe how different authors deal with the concepts of profession, science and holism since the origin of the specialty, as well as the historical conditions and phylosophical trends that influenced and influence on nursing. It was proved that nursing fulfills the professionalization criterion of the sociologist Povalko, that it has a scientific working method, the nursing care process, and a professional holistic character at least in its theoretical approach.
Key words: Nursing, holism, profession, professionalization.
