2014 Gaza War.
“The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it.” - Albert Einstein
The conflict I will be talking about is the conflict over territory between Gaza and the West Bank, which involves Jews and Arabs. The problem over territory between the Israeli’s and Palestinian’s began many years ago in 1948; however the current problem started in 1987.
Gaza is one of the most densely populated places on earth and is surrounded by Israel and Egypt.
The situation in the Middle East between Israel and Palestine is something that interests me. This is because I see the conflict as essentially a religious and cultural one.
Since the conflict began, 1,423 Gazans have died and 8,265 have been injured while 59 Israelis have died according to the Palestinian and Israeli Minister.
The recent news of fighting has focused on what Israel calls it “Right to defend itself” against rockets sent by Hamas but in reality is much more about that.
According to Israelis, they must defeat Hamas, but also must do more to limit civilian deaths.
But what is happening and why?
The problem with Palestinian land nowadays, is that it is actually two tracts of land on opposite sides of Israel.
Israel quit settlers and troops from Gaza in 2005, but maintains a blockade that human rights organizations say makes the strip. Since 2012, Gaza is governed by Hamas.
Hamas has accused Israel of war crimes in this conflict, but is no stranger to violence itself. In response, Israel arrested Hamas members in the West Bank and launched airstrikes on Gaza. A Palestinian teen was killed in the revenge attack.
It was the first time Hamas has attacked on Israel since 2012. In response Israel made Hamas pay and they began with the air strikes.
This topic is one of the most divisive issues in an argument.
But this choice, Israel over Hamas is difficult for many people to make because of the rising tide of Palestinian casualties, dead and wounded, in the Gaza war. However, the Israeli army is considered as one of the best defense forces the world has, so what can it possibly fear from Hamas? Why is it killing so many people, not only militants, but also civilians? In a conventional war with Hamas, Israel would win, not in six days as in the 1967 war, but in six hours. For example: Despite of its complex army, the best in the world which is the US lost a war in Vietnam and lost another in Afghanistan which means is not impossible for the Palestinians. In fact Israel was unable to win wars in Lebanon and Gaza even do they have the 34th largest army in the world.
There was also an Egyptian treatment peace deal that Israel accepted but Hamas rejected, because it did not propose an ending to the Israeli blockade even do it wasn’t a peace deal but just a downing
