History of Chichen Itzá
Chichen Itzá was a city built by the Mayas. This city is located in the Mexican state of Yucatán.
This city was built and established before the period of Christopher Colombus.
The Itzas were a group of people that settled in “Chichen Viejo”. Then, they built Chichen Itzá. They abandoned it came back many times, until the Toltecs conquered them in 987 A.D.
When the Spanish conquest arrived in the 16th century, Chichen Itzá was already abandoned and turned into ruins.
Main structures of Chichen Itzá
Chichen Itzá is a major attraction for tourists because of its beautiful structures such as “El Castillo”.
It receives almost 1.2 million tourists each year.
“El Castillo” or “The Kukulkan Pyramid” is a representation of the Mayan Calendar.
It has 4 staircases with 91 steps on each one, making it 365 days or a year.
El Castillo was declared one of the New Seven Wonders of the world in 2007 by New7Wonders Foundation.
Interesting fact: El Castillo
During 21th, 22th of March, the northwest corner of the pyramid makes a shadow that looks like a snake climbing down the pyramid. It represents the god, Kukulkan.
The Great Ball Court
The Great Ball Court in Chichen Itzá was use to play a sport called Mesoamerican ballgame.
The game was played by hitting a ball made of rubber with the hip and pass it through rings.
Cenote Sagrado
Cenote Sagrado is a sinkhole caused naturally by erosion.
It contains water.
This place was use by the Mayans to make rituals and to pray the gods.
Mayans sacrificed humans and expensive materials such as jewelry to ask for the rain.
